In 1982, during a harsh period of martial law in Poland, the hospitals were in great need. Jacob’s Well Appeal was set up in response. Medicines and equipment were bought and begged and sent, initially to Lodz, and gradually all over Poland. To help raise money for this Jacob’s Well started to sell donated clothing in the existing Christian Bookshop in the old market town of Beverley in East Yorkshire. In 1984 Jacob’s Well Polish Appeal was registered with the Charity Commissioners.

Later a second charity shop was opened in a socially deprived area of Hull called Orchard Park. Volunteers of all denominations come to help in the shops, sorting medicines and in the warehouse. In 2002 our constitution was widened in order to allow us to further develop our support of medical research and education. In the past supplies have been sent to the Soviet Union, Albania, Croatia, Kosovo, Lebanon and Uganda.

The New Extension at the Siret Rehabilitation Unit
A view of the new extension at the
Siret Rehabilitation Unit

Our work in Siret in the north of Romania with handicapped young people began at the end of the Communist era with the fall of Ceausescu. It was initially based in a “Neuropsychiatric” Hospital. This hospital was closed in 2001 when the children were mostly transferred to smaller units nearer
their homes with better facilities. However there was no provision for the young adults over 18.

Jacob’s Well therefore opened a Rehabilitation Unit for 12 young people - 8 boys and 4 girls to help some of the young people towards independence.
